That's a genuinely interesting signal, not a guarantee. Sample sizes in this field are often small, study designs vary a lot, and the honest summary is "promising and still developing" rather than "settled science."

Given the current evidence, the most defensible approach isn't a single supplement, it's the same handful of habits that show up across gut-microbiome research generally:

  • Fibre, consistently. NHS guidance recommends UK adults aim for around 30g of fibre a day, well above what most people actually eat. Fibre feeds the bacteria linked to a more diverse, resilient microbiome.
  • Fermented foods, in reasonable amounts. A 2021 Stanford study published in Cell found that a 10-week diet higher in fermented foods (things like yoghurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables) increased microbiome diversity and lowered markers of inflammation in healthy adults, with larger effects at higher intakes.
